Praised for his “light and expressive” voice, American tenor Ryan Mangan has appeared across New England. Appearances on the opera stage include Spoletta (Tosca, Opera Vermont), Alfred (Die Fledermaus, Hartt Opera), Borsa (Rigoletto, Opera Connecticut), among other roles. In recital with pianist Alastair Stout, he has performed Beethoven’s An die ferne Geliebte and Vaughan-Williams’ Songs of Travel. His “riveting” performance of Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn & Strings was hailed as “irresistible” by The Rutland Herald. Ryan has performed as a baroque tenor soloist in Handel’s Messiah and J.S. Bach’s cantatas BWV 61, 62, & 133. With a Bachelors of Music in Voice Performance from The Hartt School, University of Hartford, he is driven to expand the art form and bring classical music to the Vermont community.
His work as a dramatist and poet explores themes of morality, discovery, spirituality, attraction, and the unconscious. In 2023, his stage play Second Sight made its world premiere to sold-out performances, gaining statewide attention. Several of Ryan’s “vivid lyrics” have been set to music by composer Felix Jarrar and premiered at Opera America. Taking inspiration from the history and natural beauty of Vermont and from his experiences solo-traveling the globe, Ryan’s creative voice is uniquely his own.
As a teacher, Ryan works with voice students and has lectured on theater history, playwriting (Burlington Writer’s Workshop), and the Hero’s Journey. Working closely with primary students as a teacher and mentor, he has developed theatrical projects for children which encouraged creative thinking and cooperation. His annual work with Boston Cambridge Institute promotes intercultural collaboration among teenage entrepreneurs of Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia.
