Ryan’s body of work is marked by a great admiration for creators of the past and a strong ambition to make new ideas come alive. These projects include poetry collections, essays, stage plays, films, mind reading shows, and collaborations with contemporary composers.

In Sweetest Sympathy

TBA – Early music concert.

Development is in the works to bring candlelit chamber music to central Vermont. Held in a majestic country mansion, the concert will including works by Dowland, Purcell, and others.

Second Sight (film)

TBA – Independent Film.

A film adaption of Ryan Mangan’s stage play by the same title. This project is in early drafting and development.

Second Sight

2023 – Full Length Stage Play. World Premiere: Middlebury Community Players, Town Hall Theater, Vermont.

Written by Ryan Mangan after Colonel Henry Olcott’s first-hand accounts of the Eddy Family phenomena at Chittenden, Vermont in 1874. Second Sight is a frightening theatrical experience that weaves magic with drama. Through the lens of 19th century Vermont, the play explores themes of morality, death, sacrifice, fanaticism, and delusion.

The Passion Fruit Project is an ongoing collection of poems which are united by fruit symbols and develop themes of attraction and sensuality.

Second Sight: A New Vermont Play Documentary

2021 – Theatrical Documentary. Pine Fox Studio.

In collaboration with photographer Martin Van Buren, Ryan developed this documentary on the progress and performances of his new stage play Second Sight. It features discussions with the cast, designers, directors, and audience testimonials.

Goodness, God, and J.S. Bach

2023 – Essay.

In this two-part work, Goodness, God, and J.S. Bach explores ideas of objective goodness in art. It attempts to define the idea of God and its association with goodness. At the forefront of this exploration is a great respect for the vocal music of J.S. Bach and why his music just might be proof for the existence of God.

The Chimera Project

Ongoing – Poetry Project.

Written by Ryan Mangan, these abstract poems are creative explorations into his dreams. The goal of the project is to lay-out in verse what the dream could be trying to communicate from the unconscious. The project is inspired by C.G. Jung’s theories of “individuation” as a process of accessing the undiscovered self. This is a creative attempt to unify the conscious with the unconscious

Sea Boy Barcarolles

2022 – Song Cycle, Lyricist. World Premiere: Opera America.

Three new art songs on three poems. Set to music by Felix Jarrar on poems by Ryan Mangan, these three poems (“O fair and Fine Design”, “Sport you Salty Sea Boys”, and “A Boy with an Oar”) are poems on paintings by artist Henry Scott Tuke.

Songs from Afar

2020 – Candle-lit Voice and Piano Recital. Venue: Grace Congregational, Vermont.

Amid the separation of the COVID-19 pandemic, vocalist Ryan Mangan and pianist Alastair Stout bring musical light to the darkness of the year. Under the warmth of 200 candles, the artists perform Beethoven’s A die ferne Geliebte (To the Distant Beloved) and Vaughan-Williams’ Songs of Travel. These two pieces are chosen carefully as they deal with separation yet expand into more complex themes of nostalgia, remorse, resentment, individualism, and hope. Though many years old, these song cycles are relevant as we still find ourselves coldly separated from the way things used to be. With youthful and loving eyes we can look beyond our bitterness and turn toward the light that shines forth in the dark.

Second Sight Workshop

2021 – Staged-Reading. Venue: Cadwell Family Farm, Vermont

Written by Ryan Mangan, the new play Second Sight is workshopped at Cadwell Family Farm for private audiences. This project features the premiere of newly developed scenes and characters. Audiences time travel back to 1874 as they step inside the 19th century dairy barn, the light sung voice of Mary Eddy shepherds all to take their seat in the “circle room”. Here they communicate with spirits passed on and witness the story of the mysterious Eddy family.

Otter Creek

2021 – Original Song Cycle. Venue: TADA! Theater, NY, New York.

The New Works Series hosts a collaboration between composer Felix Jarrar and vocalist Ryan Mangan. This tenor-baritone song cycle puts the natural beauty of Vermont on a pedestal as it details two young men who experience love among its verdure.

ANIMA

2020 – Short Film. Filmed in Vermont.

Written by Maya Redington and Ryan Mangan, Anima is a psychological exploration into abuse, relationship, and Jungian archetypes. The collaboration features editing and photography by Simeon Pol.

An exciting collaboration between Matthew Eckler and Ryan Mangan to reimagine the seances of The Eddy Brothers of Chittenden, Vermont. For the first time, audiences experienced what it may have been like to sit-in on one of the famed seances and behold their head scratching mysteries
